Can You Leave an HSC Exam Early? Reading Time and Exam-Room Rules

You may be able to finish an HSC exam early, but you cannot leave in the first hour or the final 15 minutes, and your school can require everyone to stay until the end. Always obtain permission before leaving your seat. These restrictions come from NESA’s 2026 exam-room rules.

That means “I have finished writing” and “I can leave now” are separate decisions. Before the exam, check your school’s approach so you are not relying on what a friend was allowed to do at another centre.

What happens during reading time?

The start time on the official timetable is the beginning of reading time. It is not the time to arrive at the school gate. Build your travel and arrival plan around the instructions from your school and NESA.

During reading time, you cannot write, mark the paper or use equipment, including highlighters, apart from the stated online-exam exception. A permitted dictionary may be read, but not marked. Read the instructions and question choices; keep any planning in your head until writing is permitted.

A useful mental sequence is to check what is compulsory, what offers a choice and where each response belongs. Look for a question that has several parts or an unfamiliar source. The aim is to avoid discovering a whole section late in the exam.

You do not need to mentally solve every difficult question in those few minutes. For a long response, identifying the task and possible evidence may be enough to give you a starting point once writing begins.

What if you need the toilet or feel unwell?

Tell a supervisor and wait for instructions. NESA’s rules restrict leaving the room except in an emergency, and require supervision outside if you are to return and continue. Do not treat the early-finish window as permission to organise your own break.

Explain the actual need rather than trying to work out which rule applies by yourself. The supervisor needs to know whether you intend to finish, need assistance or need to leave temporarily. If illness affects your performance, report it promptly to the presiding officer.

Where you have an approved arrangement, check the practical details with your school beforehand. A general article cannot establish what applies to an individual student’s provisions.

Before you decide you are finished

Use a final check with a specific purpose. Simply rereading the same first paragraph three times may feel thorough while missing a blank question on the next page.

  • Coverage: look through the whole paper for required parts you skipped or intended to revisit.

  • Question match: compare your response with the actual instruction. Did it ask for two reasons, a comparison or a supported judgement?

  • Response location: check that answers are clearly numbered and placed as instructed.

  • Clarity: look for a missing unit, an unfinished sentence or a correction that is difficult to read.

For example, a response might explain why a business decision helps revenue but never address the requested disadvantage. Another may contain a sound calculation followed by an answer in the wrong units. Those are concrete things a second pass can catch.

Do not use classmates as your finishing signal

Someone packing up tells you very little about your own work. They may have a different checking routine or have decided to stop. Stay with the paper in front of you and the time available to complete it.

If you still want to finish early, raise your hand and follow the supervisor’s collection and departure instructions. NESA also prohibits taking exam materials out of the room. Arrange travel expecting the scheduled finish rather than creating pressure to leave at the earliest possible moment.

If you regularly finish quickly but miss required parts, bring a completed practice paper to a teacher or tutor. One-to-one tutoring can focus on that specific reading and checking habit; contact North Shore Tutors to discuss your course.
